For 100 years the HBA has been an advocate for Hillcrest businesses and a champion of neighborhood improvements. There are so many part of Hillcrest’s history to celebrate and this page introduces you to our exciting history in the neighborhood.
A legacy of successful projects
The HBA has been the primary activist organization that have moved projects forward in the neighborhood for over 100 years. Below are a partial list of projects that Hillcrest folks know well. The HBA is responsible for the following projects:
The Hillcrest Sign (and renovations, in 1984 and 2010).
The Uptown Planners and the Uptown Community Parking District.
The Beautification of the University Ave. medians (1999).
The Core (2006) and University Ave. (1999) Maintenance Assessment Districts.
The creation of the Hillcrest Farmers Market (1984)
The Hillcrest Pride Flag (2012) and Historical Monument (2013).
The creation of the Rainbow Crosswalk at Pride Plaza (2019).
The development of Mural Alley (2021).
The development of the Normal Street Promenade (2019-2023).
A birthday party to remember.
In October 2021 the community of Hillcrest came together to celebrate 100 years of programs and projects that have improved the neighborhood. The gala was sponsored by neighborhood partners at Scripps, AT&T, and many businesses and community leaders. The event featured music provided by DJ K-Swift, a presentation of the Warren Simon Award for Community Leadership, the unveiling of the new AT&T Mural ~ Sponsored by AT&T, and a gigantic birthday cake provided by Babycakes.
